Ferrum Oor as a preamplifier

The Ferrum Oor as a pre-amplifier

I started using the Ferrum Oor as a pre-amplifier with the Purify class D power stereo amplifier. As a headphone amplifier, this small beast delivers an amazing performance. It has been rewarded many times in several reviews.

Now I wanted to see how this small pre-amplifier with only two inputs is doing with a class D Power Amplifier, the Purify from Bruno Putzeys. As a power amplifier, I have become very familiar with this amplifier. It delivers a straight performance. Clean, detailed, and with a strong bass. In all sorts of combinations, this amplifier is doing very well. I bought this Power amplifier from Audiophonics in France.

It is possible to connect the Oor with a set of unbalanced interlinks to the Purify amplifier. For the test, I used a pair of balanced XLR links to the Purify. At the back of the Purify, there are two small switches that have to be switched when changing from RCA to XLR.

The Oor has only two inputs. It is simple but for most configurations more than enough. A phono pre-amplifier can be connected with the rca-connectors to the Oor. To the balanced XLR inputs, I have connected my Sonnet Audio Morpheus Dac from the Dutch Cees Ruijtenberg. The Sonnet Audio Hermes is the streaming device delivering Roon to the Morpheus. How does this configuration deliver its performance?

It is amazing what this combo is doing. The Sonnet Morpheus is not my best Dac at the moment. This is the Weiss 301, but already this combo is playing at a very high level. This is absolutely the performance of the Oor. I did some a-b testing with a different pre-amplifier but this is more lively, has a wide soundstage, and details more than I ever heard. The Purify is doing a straightforward performance but the Oor makes the difference.
